Yokohama, April 19, 2016 -- Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Ltd. (MHPS) has received an order for an M701F4 gas turbine to be installed at the Bibiyana-III Combined Cycle Power Plant (CCPP) to be developed by the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB). The gas turbine will serve as the core of the 400 megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired, gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) power generation plant. MHPS will supply the gas turbine to Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) of India, a technology, engineering, construction and manufacturing company entrusted with construction of the power plant on an EPC basis under Marubeni Corporation, the prime contractor of the power plant construction project. The Bibiyana-III CCPP is slated to go on-stream in 2018.

The Bibiyana-III CCPP, one of the Bangladesh's largest GTCC power plants, will be constructed adjacent to the Bibiyana Gas Field, the largest gas field in the country. The power plant is located approximately 180 kilometers (km) northeast of Dhaka, Bangladesh's capital.

In general, GTCC power generation plants consist primarily of a gas turbine(s), steam turbine, heat recovery steam generator and electricity generator. GTCC power plants generate electricity in two stages through the combined use of gas and steam turbines. The first stage uses the gas turbine; in the second stage, high-temperature exhaust from the gas turbine is used to produce steam that drives the steam turbine. Of the major components at the proposed GTCC plant, MHPS will manufacture and supply the M701F4 gas turbine.

The BPDB that operates the Bibiyana-III CCPP is a state-operated entity that handles electric power development, planning and implementation of power generation programs, and electricity generation and distribution. The BPDB was created in 1972 as a utility company to handle electricity generation and distribution under the Power Division of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Government of Bangladesh. Through a separation of functions that was effected in 1994, the BPDP currently generates and distributes power primarily in urban areas.

To date MHPS has delivered a total of 10 gas turbines to Bangladesh to support the nation's efforts to address chronic power shortages caused by rapid economic growth. Leveraging its strong customer relationships and excellent power plant equipment delivery track record, MHPS hopes to continuously contribute to the Bangladesh's power generating capacity, infrastructure improvement, and economic expansion by providing efficient and reliable power generation equipment in the years ahead.

MHPS has provided numerous GTCC power plant systems both in Japan and overseas, and their technologies and proven reliability have won the trust of customers worldwide. Going forward, MHPS will continue to proactively propose resource-efficient, low environmental impact GTCC power plant solutions to the global market.
